  • AAG : All About Girls

This year, International Women's Day falls on Thursday the 8th of March. So for the Wednesday event at the Gallery Cafe we thought we'd do something dedicated to all the girls in our lives.

Imagine an evening when some ladies do whatever they feel like doing - singing, reading a story, reciting poetry whatever...and the men/guys only sing, read stories, recite poetry in praise of the females.

It would be lovely if you could find the time (5 - 15 minutes) to do your thing. The singers amongst you can sing songs in praise of women. The poets can recite poems that celebrate womanhood. Dramatised readings about women too are welcome. The ladies of course who want to participate can choose to do whatever they want to do...it's their evening after all.

All in all, let's make it an evening with a difference.

    Vive la Femme.

  • Myriad Expressions a solo show by Maruthi Paila

Abstract art provides scope to play with lines and colours. It's personal and subjective and Maruthi Paila explores those possibilities of expression in myriad ways. Moving away from figurative imagery, Maruthi dwells in the non-representational world for his maiden solo show. The acrylics and small format works are geometric, with criss-cross lines forming haphazard, asymmetrical patterns perhaps resulting from an outpour of the artist's emotions. It's like a mosaic of lines and colours. Yet, there is a sense of harmony in the composition. Devoid of specific shapes and forms technically, abstract art can still have some perceptible formations. Rather, it allows the viewer to figure out and deduce 'shapes'. So, even in the course of abstraction, Maruthi has provided some visual clues to the viewer'. Some of his works have a 'stained glass' look with a misty 'cloud-like' effect created on them. In the small paper works one can glean some kind of formations and the artist has managed to create an eerie effect in a few of them. In the larger works one can surmise that in between the columns of smoke or mist are bits of coloured windows akin to stained glass windows. The colours used in the works range from bright to dark and dense. In some the lines may look entangled, free, knotty or in a maze. Maruthi has been seeking to find a language of his own working and exploring different types of imagery, figurative and non-figurative - a continuous exercise to develop his visual vocabulary for growth and perfection. Leonard Brooks said "Abstract art…is part of the constant change and vital searching that energizes every true art." Maruthi's quest in a sense has been a soul-stirring one where he has touched the depths and highs of emotions.

  • Pratibimb - by Bijay Biswal

Born in Pallahara, Odisha, brought up amidst bountiful nature this highly passionate self taught artist had a clear goal in his life. To be a painter, not only was he driven by this obsessive desire of making art but spent most of his waking hours thinking about art. Started his creative journey with humble charcoal from his mothers chullah, he ended up as a railwayman in Nagpur after finishing college education, undeterred, he balanced his job and art remarkably well, so much so that his works started getting noticed nationally and internationally. Especially his unique rendition of rain soaked Indian railway platforms. His popularity as an artist grew multifold culminating in getting noticed by none other than honourable PM Narendra Modi. Biswaal became the toast of the art world after getting lauded as an artist in his famous nationally televised pep talk show MANN KI BAAT. He quit his railway job and took up art as his full time profession. It’s immensely satisfying and rewarding to follow your passion and reach the logical end for which God has sent each of us to this earth. I am born to paint and would love to die painting.

  • Colours Of Divinity

A human being is a part of the whole, universe. It is limited in time and space. We experience thoughts, our feelings and ourselves as something separate from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of consciousness.

At that point the thin line between individual existence & whole universe gets resolve. This resolution is been interpreted in varied ways and then the confrontation comes into existence, with the self.

Artist Manisha Raju's lyricism is also a way of confrontation, search for self, that metaphysical existence which exists beyond physical existence. Her narration converses many subjects and its relation with contemporary happening.

Her expression process is through figuration with well-defined forms, unique matrix of subtle tonal variation and minimalist contributing elements. Each developing form on the confined surface offers, her relative space, where actual form & empty space around negotiate relatively and adds meaning to the space.

The core approach of Manisha's work deals with female existence her power & its unlimited existence in every era. The way women carries herself metaphysically and her known un-known, noticed-unnoticed struggle, throughout her life. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self.

Manisha Raju is basically from Nagpur, Maharashtra State. Presently living and practicing her art at Chennai. She's a Member of PPA - Progressive Painter's Association, Cholamandal Artist Village, Chennai

  • KissaGo's Masala Chai

A lot can happen over a cup of tea!

Masala Chai by 'KissaGo' revolves around the concept of tea being a form of social network. People get together for tea and build long term friendships with tea being the binding factor in many relationships. Masala Chai will be a presentation of Divya Prakash Dubey's Hindi Monologues - Jeevanshaadi.com, Hum Do Humara Ek and Love You Forever and Fill in the blanks.

Masala Chai is an assortment of part sensitive, part profound and utterly enchanting stories which are beginning to become the hallmark of their enormously observant and industrious writer. Every story has its roots in the mundane. But it's the simple rendering of the profound and profound rendering of the simple which lends all these tales a unique flavor. Each story will suck you in with the simplicity of the plot, depiction of wide, and at times, disparate range of emotions and undoubtedly, the brilliance of the narrative. As far as story-telling goes, Masala Chai is piping hot, and of course: addictive.

In this second venture, the characters come even more alive. Each story comes with a flavor of its own, which is unique to it. Every story gives a feel of a relation you have been in, at some point of time. If it wasn't for these moments life wouldn't be complete and if it wasn't for this Play, you will never go back to revisit these memories. These stories will make you laugh, with their innocence, leave your eyes moist with the dark emotions. Every human has a list within them, lists of things they did, they never did or still dream of doing. These short stories are all about that. In short, if you want to know why this book should be part of your collection? Because no matter what these stories bring out from within you, they will make you react to each situation in them as if it's your own.

  • Adventures of Louis The Frenchie

Pop art is a visual art movement of the mid 1950s. It is a form of art that makes everyday images and objects into commercial and illustrative art. One of the biggest movements of the twentieth century which drew its inspiration from mass culture, advertising, movies and comic books.

Tanya Gawdi, visual artist based in Los Angeles, originally from Mumbai. Fascinated by light, colors and forms, which inspire her to create her work, by using various techniques to make photos such as collage, film, as well as digital photography and incorporates her drawing and painting skills.

Photography allows her to embed nature and art together, forming an absolutely creative frame. She is drawn to the imaginative play, these frames allows her to produce her artwork, and finds the magical nature of this medium endlessly intriguing.

As per artist, Tanya : “The inspiration for this project comes from my very own personal popular culture, my biggest inspiration and my own everyday object- my dog Louis. My life practically revolves around my dog and finding inspiration in him for my work was the most fun I've had creating images.

It is true that dog is a man's best friend. Louis has brought color into my life and with these images, I hope to do the same to the viewer.”

Tanya started her photographic journey by doing a Diploma in Photography in Mumbai. She then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a Bachelor in Fine Arts with Photography as her major from the New York Film Academy. She will graduate from NYFA in September 2017.
